The Australian Native Seed Nature Study is a hands-on adventure into the incredible world hidden inside our native seeds. From tiny gum seeds and winged banksia seeds to tough wattles waiting for the right conditions to wake up, there is so much to discover!

Children will explore seed anatomy, germination, dispersal, dormancy, fire, native wildlife connections and propagation, while getting their hands dirty with real experiments, nature walks, seed collecting, planting and observation.

Inside you’ll find activities for a range of ages, including preschool, primary and older students, so families can learn together without needing completely separate studies.

Grow native seedlings, investigate hot-water treatment, become a Seed Detective, make a seed collection envelope, hunt for different seed dispersal methods, plan a native pollinator patch, study seedlings over time, create seed art and discover why choosing native plants suited to your local area really matters.

And because seeds are such an incredible part of Creation, we’ll also stop and wonder at the amazing design God has placed inside something so small.

This study is designed to encourage children to slow down, look closely, ask questions, experiment and connect what they are learning with the Australian environment around them.

This Australian Native Seeds Nature Study invites children to explore the fascinating variety of seeds found in Australian plants. We will begin by examining and comparing different seeds, then we’ll choose one or more easy-to-grow native species to plant.

Follow the planting and care instructions, record changes in a nature journal, and measure new growth. The study can be enjoyed as a single lesson or over several weeks as students observe germination, seedling development and transplanting.

Suitable for:

Mixed-age children, preschool to secondary students. who can participate in the planting and growing activities. 

Lesson length:

  • One introductory lesson: 60–90 minutes.
  • Daily observations: 5–10 minutes.
  • Investigation period: 2–4 weeks.
  • Transplanting activity: approximately 1–3 months after germination, depending on the species.

Nature Study Focus

  • discover why some seeds need fire, heat, water or other triggers.
