Nature Study in the Home of Nicola

Nature Journaling· Nature Study· Summer· Uncategorized

27 Jan

We’ll be visiting four home educators to observe how nature is studied within their homes. We start with the home of Nicola from The World is Their Classroom in the UK.

We don’t follow a particular curriculum for Nature Study, rather we make time throughout the week to explore nature and take part in various awards and challenges such as The John Muir Award  and 30 Days Wild.

The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme which allows children to discover, explore and conserve a place which they feel passionately about protecting and preserving.

My children decided to complete their award in our local park and started planning the activities they wanted to carry out. They helped clear streams, identified pond life, recording the birds using the bird boxes, went on scavenger hunts, as well as making wooden duck huts for the island in the lake during the winter months. The award took over a year to complete, but they learnt so much and it tied in nicely with their other subjects.

Every June we take part in 30 Days Wild

Garden Detectives

We are sent a great pack of cards, one for each day of the month, and we complete the nature challenge. Last year the kiddies had a great time creating Art with nature, listening for wild sounds, sketching up close and spotting mammals. They were so excited when a hedgehog finally decided to visit our garden! Follow us on Instagram @theworldistheirclassroom to see what we get up to this year!

We also take part in surveys, which is another great activity, especially for the older kiddies to connect with nature. We recently took part in Clean Water for Wildlife

They found out just how clean the water is in our local park, for wildlife, testing the levels of Nitrate and Phosphate. During this great ‘hands on’ activity they learnt that it only takes a little pollution to damage habitats like streams and ponds, which harms the most sensitive plants and animals that call these places home.
For my younger children, I plan lots of outdoor Nature activities throughout the week. They love exploring and using all their senses and it fosters their intellectual, social, emotional and physical development. We go bug hunting and collecting bits of nature which they then use for counting, art work or freezing into blocks for excavation activities. Some of our favourite activities are weaving with flowers, gluing bits of nature onto card bracelets and making journey sticks.

Hi there, I’m Nicola from the UK. I decided to Home Educate back in 2003 when I had my first child, and now I home educate all my five children. There were so many reasons which influenced my decision but the main reason was to enjoy watching my children learn, develop and bond with each other and I didn’t feel I needed any external help to do that. Now in 2018 I am happy I made those decisions and my eldest in now studying for her IGCSES. Home education is on the rise here in the UK and I set up my IG and blog in order to help and inspire others to teach their children at home too. Homeschooling is a gentle amble for me since four of my five children have graduated. I share my joy with things beautiful, good and lovely with my grandchildren where I live contently with hubby in rural South Australia.

Hey Explorer

We have outdoor expeditions to undertake and adventures to embark upon. We’ll explore the outdoors together, side by side, and uncover miraculous mysteries, and secrets. We’ll wander, and wonder in amazement as we become familiar with the Australian fauna and flora.

I desire to come alongside you in the muddle, making nature study the joy it’s meant to be.  Outdoor adventures will become a regular part of your life as you make connections to the natural world with a sense of awe.

We began our homeschool journey this year keen to explore all that nature study entails. I had searched the web for weeks to research what we would use as our framework. I cannot describe the elation I felt when I came across an AUSTRALIAN nature study guide! Marie has done all the hard work and put together a wonderfully elaborate resource for all ages. You can dip your toe in or dive right into all the ideas and links. There’s so much here we could spend all week doing nature study, and often we do.

We didn’t find out about the program until about half way through term, so we played catch up most of the time. I love how open ended the lessons are, but with enough structure to work well for those children needing such a program. We have been able to cover much of the required curriculum whilst enjoying the activities we love. Your program has been such a blessing to us, because we needed a change to our homeschooling lessons which would still cover curriculum, but would enable us to relax and enjoy “school” together. Thank you.

We have really enjoyed the program this term. We have gotten outside more often and the children are definitely taking more notice of things when we are out. Having a place to share what we have done and seen has been an encouragement to keep it up. I sometimes felt like we could spend longer on some topics as they were so interesting but that is probably just my obsessive "we must cover everything now" problem.

I looked high and low online for an Australian nature based curriculum and when I found Australian Nature study Guide on Instagram I was so excited to have finally found something that my family can relate to. My favourite thing about this guide is that Marie is so hands on and involved with her customers. I have never felt alone in the journey, she is there to guide and encourage us every step of the way in the Facebook group. Thanks Marie for welcoming us to your nature study family 🙂
